HISTORY

Origin and History

Tremont Community Council Home Attendant Program, Inc. is a non-for-profit, non-sectarian community based organization servicing the needs and concerns of the communities throughout the Bronx. In 1981, community residents responded to the growing need to provide home care to Bronx residents, who otherwise would become institutionalized, by establishing a home attendant program. Thus, TCCHAP was established.

The original mission of TCCHAP was to provide home attendant services to Bronx residents, thereby allowing the homebound to remain in their own homes and stay connected to the larger community despite their illness or disabilities. However, resulting from the needs of the clients, changes in the ethnic make-up of the community residents, and service cuts, the agency’s role in the community has broadened The agency has been able to respond to these new needs while maintaining the integrity of its mission. Its accomplishments are due largely to the direct participation and cooperation of community leaders as board members, advisors, staff, program participants and concerned citizens joined in an effort to improve the quality of life in the Bronx.

The agency started operating with office space of 900 square feet, a staff of four and approximately 100 home attendants. Today it occupies 2,800 square feet has an administrative staff of Fifteen and over 225 home attendants and over the last twenty five plus years has excelled in providing quality Home Care.
